A quick lesson on satire

Oh noes! They're coming to get you and steal your guns and bibles! It’s supposed to be funny.  It’s supposed to be witty.  It sometimes plays on the dimwitted people it’s making fun of.  That having been said, can everyone (especially Democrats, because we’re smarter than this) please cease with the calls for boycotts and chemical warfare against The New Yorker over a satirical image (pictured right) that appears on the cover of the magazine’s current issue.  Please?  Seriously, when I first heard about the “mass outrage” over this, the first thing I thought of was the woman (seen below) who stood in front of McPherson Square metro last Summer protesting after an article in The Onion claimed that the U.S. planned to re-hang Saddam Hussein.  Are you all really that dimwitted?

Terry–I’m not really sure if you see the difference between a respected magazine with thoughtful essays and a publication that is meant to satire and parody the news and journalism. Truly apples and oranges.

Point being, they have used it in the past and are somewhat known for it among people who, ya know, read. They are not exactly The Onion or Wonkette but they certainly aren’t The Washington Post or The New York Times either (IE they are known for doing both satire and hard news).

Terry, I completely agree with you. You can check out my post on this for repetition http://poli-think.blogspot.com/2008/07/obama-terrorist-on-new-yorker-cover.html

    Sam,
I would venture that a vast majority of American’s have never heard of The New Yorker. Also, it does have plenty of satire. It also has lots of fiction, and reviews. I think Terry’s point in his response is that unlike the New York Times, no one goes to the New Yorker for news, its supposed to be a joke.

    Slow news day.
